What a Nepal Wedding Costs When You Fly In From the US (Our $40K Budget)
This guide is for Nepali families who live abroad and go back to Nepal for a wedding, like us. It counts the plane tickets, the party palace, the gold and the customs rules, in dollars.
Short answer: about $40,000 for both families, or about $50,000 with a real gold set.
- Bride's side (Nepal): about $20,000
- Our side (groom, flying in from the US): about $20,000, of which about $6,100 was four plane tickets
- Real gold set for the bride from the groom's side: add about $10,000. That makes the groom's side about $30,000. We used imitation gold.
These are our rounded totals for a Kathmandu wedding in October 2026 with a haldi, the wedding day, and an evening reception for about 160 to 250 guests.
I searched for this before our wedding and could not find it. There are good Nepali-rupee budget guides for couples who live in Kathmandu, and there are "destination wedding" guides for foreigners. Nobody wrote the version for a Nepali family that lives in the US, earns in dollars, and flies home for the wedding. So here is ours.
Who traveled and when
- 4 people flew from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Kathmandu, with one stop in Doha.
- We arrived about a week before the wedding and stayed almost 3 weeks.
- Events: haldi the day before, the wedding the next day, and a reception at a party palace 3 days later.
- The trip fell in the Dashain window, which is the busiest and most expensive time to fly home.
The real numbers we paid
Most of the wedding was paid in cash by family in Nepal, so I do not have a receipt for every line. These are the ones I have. Dollar amounts use the Nepal Rastra Bank rate of NPR 152.23 per USD (2 November 2026). Your bank rate on the day you pay will be different.
| Item | What we paid | In USD |
|---|---|---|
| 4 round-trip tickets, IAD to KTM (economy, 2 x 23 kg bags each) | $1,533.43 each | $6,133.72 |
| Party palace advance (reception) | NPR 100,000 | about $657 |
| Saree from a Kathmandu boutique | NPR 20,000 | about $131 |
| DJ quote for the reception | NPR 15,000 | about $99 |
| Our side, all in (events, clothes, gifts, travel; imitation gold) | about $20,000 | |
| Real gold set for the bride (if you buy one) | about 5 to 6 tola | about $10,000 |
| Groom's side with a real gold set | about $30,000 | |
| Bride's side, all in | about $20,000 |
The surprise for us: the plane tickets were less than a third of our side. Clothes, gifts for relatives, and the reception were the big items. With a real gold set, gold becomes the biggest single item.

Quick math for a 200-guest reception
- 200 guests x Rs 2,200 per plate = Rs 4.4 lakh, about $2,890.
- Add 13% VAT if the quote does not include it.
- Compare with gold: 4 tola is about $7,150. For most families, gold costs more than feeding everyone.
Where the money actually goes
- Gold. A gold set for the bride from the groom's side is about $10,000. Nepal doubled the gold import duty from 10% to 20% in May 2026, and the price hit a record after that. Imitation gold is a real option. It looks the same in photos, and you avoid customs limits, declarations and the risk of carrying gold through two airports. We used imitation gold.
- Food for guests. The guest count drives this. Every 50 extra guests at a mid-range palace is roughly $600 to $900.
- Flights. US to Kathmandu is typically $1,160 to $1,750 round trip. Dashain and December dates sit at the top of that range or above.
- Gifts and clothes. Relatives expect gifts from the side coming from America. Make a name list early. This line grows quietly.
- Photo and video. Book it first. Good teams fill up in wedding season.
Tips if you are flying in from the US
- Use the luggage. Economy on our route gave each person 2 bags of 23 kg. That is 8 bags for 4 people. Bring gifts out, bring wedding clothes and gifts back.
- Finish tailoring before Dashain. Banks and many shops close for most of the Dashain week. A daura suruwal needs a few fittings.
- Book the venue before you fly. Family can pay the advance in Nepal. We paid our party palace advance about 6 weeks before the wedding.
- Wedding season is short. Mangsir 2083 (Nov 17 to Dec 15, 2026) has only 8 auspicious wedding dates. Party palaces fill up on those dates.
- Get every quote on WhatsApp. Ask exactly what is included: hours, sound system, stage, VAT.
- Arrive a week early. Jet lag, fittings, puja items and vendor checks all take time.
Customs: gold and cash
Check the official rules before you travel. The sources below disagree in places.
- Gold into Nepal: 50 grams of gold jewelry duty-free is the most common figure (about 4.3 tola). One airport customs report says 25 grams for men. Foreign passport holders must take their jewelry back out. Gold coins and bars are treated differently.
- Cash into or out of Nepal: declare more than USD 5,000.
- Cash into or out of the US: declare more than USD 10,000 (FinCEN 105). A family traveling together counts as one.
- Gold back into the US: the duty-free allowance is $800 per person. New wedding gold is usually far above that, so declare it. Gold you took from the US is not dutiable, but carry receipts or photos.
Vendors
I will add the vendors we used, with photos, soon. For the US side (Nepali caterers, decorators and event halls for a reception after you return), see the Nepali events and weddings directory. For tickets, see Nepali travel agencies.

FAQ
How much does a Nepali wedding cost if you live in the US?
Our wedding in Kathmandu in October 2026 cost about $40,000 for both families together: about $20,000 on the bride's side and about $20,000 on our side, including about $6,100 for four round-trip tickets. We used imitation gold. A real gold set for the bride from the groom's side adds about $10,000, so plan for about $30,000 on the groom's side and about $50,000 in total.
Should I buy real gold or imitation gold for a Nepal wedding?
Both are common. A real gold set costs about $10,000 and brings customs limits and declarations in both Nepal and the US. Imitation jewelry looks the same in photos and you can carry it without any customs worry. We used imitation gold.
How much is a party palace per plate in Kathmandu?
A 2026 guide puts budget halls at Rs 1,200-1,850 per plate and mid-range banquets at Rs 1,850-2,800. Premium hotels go above Rs 4,500. Add 13% VAT if the quote does not include it.
How much gold can I bring into Nepal?
Sources disagree. The most common figure is 50 grams of gold jewelry duty-free, but one airport customs report says 25 grams for men. Foreign passport holders must take their jewelry back out. Confirm with Nepal customs before you fly.
Do I have to declare wedding gold when I return to the US?
Yes, if you bought it on the trip. The US duty-free allowance for returning residents is $800, and wedding gold is usually far above that. Gold you took from the US is not dutiable, but carry receipts or photos to prove it.
When is wedding season in Nepal?
The main months are Mangsir, Magh, Falgun, Baisakh and Asadh. Mangsir 2083 (Nov 17 to Dec 15, 2026) has only 8 auspicious dates, so party palaces book out early.
