Places to Visit on Your Trip Home to Nepal: Mustang, Manang, Rara, Lumbini (How to Get There in 2026)

By Saurav Sharma · 2026-11-02

Short answer: new roads and flights put these within a normal trip home.

  • Mustang: road all the way to Lo Manthang and Korala, plus morning flights from Pokhara to Jomsom in season.
  • Manang: jeep road from Besisahar, but landslides closed it twice in summer 2026.
  • Rara: fly to Talcha, then a short drive. Best April to June.
  • Lumbini: the easiest one for parents. A 30 minute flight and a short drive, at about 150 m.
  • On a US passport, you pay foreigner permit fees and foreigner domestic airfares.

When many of us left Nepal, Mustang meant a long walk or a small plane, and Rara meant days on foot. That has changed. This post is about where to go once you are home. For getting to Nepal, see flights from the US to Nepal.

Mustang: Jomsom, Muktinath and Lo Manthang

How to get there now

  • By road. The Kaligandaki corridor runs 445 km from Nawalpur to the Korala border with China. As of May 2025, about 250 km was blacktopped and most of the rest was gravel. People in Lo Manthang told the Kathmandu Post that Pokhara is now reachable within a day. That trip used to take six days on foot.
  • By air. Tara Air and Summit Air fly small Twin Otters from Pokhara to Jomsom. Flights go in the morning, because afternoon winds at Jomsom are strong.
  • Both can stop. Regular Jomsom flights were suspended for about three months in the 2026 monsoon. In October 2026, floods on the Kali Gandaki blocked the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road for twelve days, and the airlines raised flights to up to seven a day each. Later that month, Kantipur reported both airlines had suspended regular flights again. Check with the airline and local news the week you go.

Can parents go?

Jomsom sits at about 2,743 m, Kagbeni at about 2,804 m and Muktinath at about 3,762 m. Many families make the Muktinath pilgrimage, but that height can cause altitude sickness, even in healthy people. Ask their doctor before the trip. Spend a night in Jomsom or Kagbeni before going up, and come down if anyone gets a bad headache or feels sick.

Permits and costs

  • Upper Mustang (Lo Manthang) restricted area permit: sources disagree. B360 Nepal reported that the Cabinet decided on 18 November 2025 to charge foreigners $50 per person per day. A February 2026 guide still lists $500 for the first 10 days and $50 per extra day. Confirm with a registered trekking agency before you budget.
  • Nepali citizens do not pay the restricted area fee, according to the same 2026 guide. They need permission from immigration or local administration, listed at NPR 500 to 1,000.
  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area) permit: NPR 3,000 for foreigners.
  • If you are a US citizen, you pay the foreigner rates, even if you grew up in Nepal.

Best season

March to May and September to November. Upper Mustang sits in a rain shadow, so the monsoon is drier there, but the access roads can be hard in the rains. Winter brings snow and cold.

Manang

How to get there now

Manang village now has a motorable road, and goods come in by jeep and mule. The Besisahar to Chame road in Lamjung is the only road link between Manang district and the rest of Nepal. That makes it fragile. On 29 July 2026, a landslide at Shrichaur washed away part of the road and blocked it. In August 2026, the road sank at Khotro in Manang and heavy traffic was affected. Hire a local jeep from Besisahar and ask about the road the day before.

Can parents go?

Manang sits at about 3,519 m. The village has a medical centre that focuses on altitude sickness. A jeep gets you up faster than your body can adjust, so plan rest nights on the way, such as in Chame, and keep the trip slow.

Best season

Go outside the monsoon. The 2026 road closures all came in July and August.

Rara Lake

How to get there now

  • By air: fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj or Surkhet, then to Talcha airport in Mugu. Buddha Air says Talcha flights are irregular, and the drive from Talcha to Rara takes about two hours.
  • By road: a public bus runs from Surkhet to Gamgadhi, the Mugu headquarters. Expect a multi-day trip from Kathmandu.
  • Sources differ on the last stretch. Wikipedia says the lake has no connection to the national road network. Buddha Air says you can drive to the border of Rara National Park and walk about 40 minutes from the entrance at Salleri to the lake. The road is newer than many older guides.

Can parents go?

Yes, for most. The lake is at about 2,990 m, lower than Muktinath or Manang. From the park entrance, Buddha Air lists a horse ride at Rs 1,200 if the walk is too much.

Best season

April to June is warm. December to March is below freezing, and heavy snow can block access.

Lumbini

How to get there now

Buddha Air flies Kathmandu to Bhairahawa 8 times a day, about 30 minutes each way. Lumbini is about a 30 minute drive from Bhairahawa.

Can parents go?

This is the easy one. Lumbini is at about 150 m, so altitude is not a worry, and the flight is short.

Cost note for US passport holders

Domestic flights charge foreigners in dollars. In March 2025 the Kathmandu Post reported Kathmandu to Bhairahawa at $85 for foreigners and Rs 5,000 for Nepalis. If your children are US citizens, they pay the foreigner fare.

Plan it in one trip

  1. Pick one high place (Mustang or Manang) and one easy place (Lumbini or Pokhara) if you travel with parents.
  2. Keep two spare days for road closures and cancelled flights.
  3. Carry your passport and, if you have it, your citizenship certificate. Permit fees and airfares depend on which one you show.
  4. Set up data before you leave the city. See the Nepal eSIM and SIM card guide.

FAQ

Can you drive to Mustang now?

Yes. The Kaligandaki corridor road runs from Nawalpur to the Korala border with China, through Jomsom and Lo Manthang. About 250 km of its 445 km was blacktopped as of May 2025, and the rest was mostly gravel. Floods and landslides still close it, as in October 2026.

How much is the Upper Mustang permit for a US citizen?

Sources disagree. Nepal's Cabinet decided in November 2025 to charge foreigners $50 per person per day. Some 2026 guides still list $500 for the first 10 days. Nepali citizens do not pay the restricted area fee. A US passport holder pays the foreigner rate, so confirm with a registered trekking agency.

Can my parents go to Muktinath?

Many do, by jeep from Jomsom, but Muktinath sits at about 3,762 m. That is high enough for altitude sickness. Ask their doctor first, go up slowly, and do not rush from Kathmandu to Muktinath in one or two days.

How do you get to Rara Lake?

Most people fly from Nepalgunj or Surkhet to Talcha airport in Mugu, then drive about two hours. Flights are irregular. By road, a public bus runs from Surkhet to Gamgadhi, and the trip from Kathmandu takes several days.

Is there a road to Manang?

Yes. Jeeps run on the Besisahar to Chame road, the only road link between Manang and the rest of Nepal. Landslides blocked it in July 2026 and damaged it again in August 2026, so check before you go.

What is the best time to visit Rara Lake?

April to June is warm. December to March is below freezing, with heavy snow that can block access.
